What Are Porcelain Veneers?

June 21, 2012

In our last post, we talked about Invisalign clear braces, one of the most popular cosmetic dentistry services available at Dr. Salivonchik’s Whitehall office. Today, we’ll highlight another great cosmetic dentistry service our patients can take advantage of—porcelain veneers.

The Difference Porcelain Veneers Can Make

If you’ve ever hid your smile because of flaws like cracks, chips, stains, or misalignment, then porcelain veneers may be just what you need to breathe new life into your smile.

Porcelain veneers, which are made from thin discs of high-quality dental porcelain, work by covering the front of front teeth, hiding imperfections in the process. They can be cared for just like natural teeth, with regular brushing and flossing. What’s more, because porcelain veneers can be custom-shaded, you can look forward to your porcelain veneers blending in with the rest of your smile.

Do I Need a Porcelain Crown?

May 21, 2012

If you have a tooth that’s badly decayed, worn, cracked, or broken, you may need to have it restored with a porcelain crown. Using a crown, it’s possible for Dr. Salivonchik to return strength, structure, and function to a tooth that might otherwise have to be removed.

For your convenience, our Whitehall dental office uses CEREC technology to mill custom-made porcelain crowns in just a single visit. That’s something that sets us apart from other practices.

Traditionally, it’s taken at least two visits to complete a crown procedure. During the first procedure, an impression is taken of the patient’s tooth and a temporary crown is put in place. During the second, the procedure is completed with a permanent crown. In between that, though, it’s always possible another appointment could be needed if your temporary crown falls out or cracks.

With CEREC, the entire procedure can be reduced to just a single visit.

When you come in, Dr. Salivonchik will take a 3D image of the tooth we’ll be replacing. That information will be fed to our CEREC machine, which will start working on your tooth. Once it’s done, all that’s left is for us to put your crown in place and check the fit. That’s all there is to it!

If you’d like to know more about CEREC crowns from Dr. Salivonchik’s Whitehall dental office, visit our CEREC page or give us a call. We serve patients Whitehall, Allentown, Bethlehem, Easton, The Poconos, and beyond.

Do I Need Dental Implants?

April 26, 2012

If you’re missing one or more teeth, or have grown frustrated with traditional dentures, you may be asking yourself this very question. Perhaps you’ve heard about the many great benefits of dental implants, and you’d like to take advantage of them. If so, don’t hesitate to get in touch with Dr. Salivonchik’s Whitehall dental office.

Dental implants are a great restorative dentistry option but they aren’t right for every patient. If they are right for you, though, Dr. Salivonchik can help. With our on-site periodontist and talented team, we can place and restore your dental implants right from our office.

What Makes Dental Implants Superior To Other Restorative Options?

The key difference between dental implants and another restorative dentistry option like traditional dentures, or a traditional crown and bridge is that dental implants replace both your missing tooth and your missing root.

That’s important.

Without your root, your jaw will atrophy, eventually causing further tooth loss. With a restored root, though, you can look forward to enjoy a strong, functional, natural bite once again.

Want to learn more about how dental implants can help you transform your smile? Visit the dental implants page on our website, and call us if you have any questions or would like to set up an appointment. Dr. Salivonchik’s Whitehall office is located in Lehigh Valley and serves patients from Allentown, Bethlehem, Easton, The Poconos, and surrounding areas.

The importance of treating TMD

March 1, 2012

Temporomandibular joint disorder (TMD) commonly spells the following problems for suffers: chronic headaches; facial, neck, shoulder, jaw, or low back pain; tingling in the hands or fingers; a jaw that pops or clicks; bruxism (teeth grinding); an inability to fully open or close the mouth; chronic earaches.

However, temporomandibular joint (TMJ) pain or TMD is more complicated than some think. New research shows that people with TMD have greater heart rate increases during mild physical and psychological stress. This links one’s level of pain to the body’s physiological regulating system. Also, there appears to be a genetic connection to TMD.  Researchers have identified specific genes known to influence stress response, psychological well-being and inflammation.

So what are the benefits of laser dentistry?

February 23, 2012

Since Dr Salivonchik began utilizing dental lasers in his practice, he’s witnessed some dramatic results and improvements in patients’ experiences. For example, this includes improved soft tissue healing from gum procedures and more comfortable treatment, often without the drill or Novocaine.

Unfortunately, Dr Salivonchik has also seen some very exaggerated claims online, like suggestions of never having to use the drill or Novocaine.  Such claims are untrue. There are many times when minimal use of drills is still required and so is the use of Novocaine. This doesn’t negate the usefulness of lasers, but it does negate the credibility of manufactures or practitioners who make these claims.

For more information on the use of laser dentistry and how it can be used in your dental treatment, click here or call Dr Salivonchik’s Whitehall practice on (610) 502-1545.
