Have you recently made the choice to replace your missing teeth with dental implants? That is great! Your dentist in the Lehigh Valley will help you achieve a complete, healthy smile. However, the complexity of the procedure involves many different aspects, which may leave you a bit confused about the terms being used. To help you understand the process, here are some key terms that are related to the treatment.
Abutment
The abutment acts as a connector piece that is placed on the top of the dental implant post. The custom-made restoration is then attached to it to hold it securely in place.
Abutment Teeth
If you are replacing two or more teeth, you will likely hear the term “abutment teeth.” This involves those that are used to support the prosthetic teeth, such as the tooth that is capped for a bridge or those that hold the clasps for a partial denture.
Ceramic
For a natural-looking smile, ceramic is the material used to make your custom-made dental crown.
Crown
When a single tooth is replaced, a crown is attach to the implant post to fill the empty space. It can also refer to a cap that is placed over a damaged or decayed tooth to restore its health and function.
Dentures
Traditional dentures are a removable prosthetic that is used to replace missing teeth. Generally, it rests on top of the gum tissue using an adhesive; however, if it is supported by dental implants, it will be anchored in place.
Implant
The implant is a titanium post that is surgically placed into the jawbone to replace the root of a tooth while providing a secure foundation for the prosthetic. This refers to an endosteal implant, which is the most commonly used. In some cases, an eposteal implant may be needed, which sits on the jawbone.
Osseointegration
This refers to the healing process that occurs after the implant post has been placed. Over the course a few weeks, your jawbone will naturally fuse to the post through this process.
Subperiosteal Implant
In some cases, a subperiosteal implant will be used instead of a traditional option. It sits on top of the jawbone while allowing the posts from a metal framework to stick through the gum to attach the prosthetic teeth.
Titanium
Most dental implants are now made from titanium because it is biocompatible and hypoallergenic. It is also strong and durable while being lightweight.
Zirconia
In the event titanium cannot be used, a zirconia post may be needed. It does not use prosthetic connections, often reducing the risk for bacteria growth for better healing results.
